The original station opened in 1845 and is now subject to improvements planned from 2023 (see guildfordforward.com for further information) The River Wey runs through the centre of Guildford and is very near to the station. Guildford is surrounded on three sides by the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty . The city boasts a castle, cathedral, many churches, theatres and a museum.
